I see a catch 22 situation arising in the DVD CD scene. Maybe worth keeping an eye out for one in the UK and taking a punt to see if you like it. I ended up buying a second-hand player that cost £3400 when new. Two of the newer players had the ES sabre DC's (one of them being the Oppo, which Steve mentioned), a third one in the same price range had something different, which I can't remember. They may have been very detailed and transparent but in some ways I preferred the Yamaha, as I found that the new players were rather 'glassy' with quite a polished digital sheen the Yamaha to my ears sounded more organic. I auditioned new players between £1000 and £1500 that didn't sound much better. I still have one, which I'm keeping as a 'spare' because its sound quality is worth far more than what I could sell it for. If you're looking for analogue outputs into a decent stereo amplifier, just need DVD (not Blu-ray) and are happy to buy second-hand then the Yamaha DVD SD-2700 will give you excellent CD playback for the money. It does not have Analog out, but it has both Optical and Coaxial. So, they are not cheap but they do bring a lot of features to the game. The best OPPO Universal BluRay I believe was about £1200. Then we have to consider how much money you have to spend on the project. Feed that into a DAC and you have everything you need. However, even a modest BluRay will likely have Optical and/or Coaxial Outputs. If you get a Bluray (as an example) that has Analog Out, that means it has Internal DACs and that simplifies things. Though Cambridge also makes a nice Universal Disc Player. OPPO would have been the perfect choices, but they are no longer in production. The first aspect is to get a Universal Disc Player.
